LinkedIn Character Limit: Every Field That Matters in 2026

Ruz, Founder LeadShark · Nov 6, 2026 · 4 min read

LinkedIn's post character limit is 3,000 characters. That is the one number LinkedIn publishes clearly. Everything else (headline, About, comments, DMs, connection notes) either lives in the editor, on an older help page, or is measured by third parties. This page puts the confirmed numbers first and flags the rest.

LinkedIn character limits at a glance

Connection request note 200 LinkedIn Help (older pages said 300 for Premium)

InMail body 2,000 (1,900 on some Sales Navigator and Recruiter pages) LinkedIn Help

"See more" on a feed post is not a hard limit. LinkedIn folds the post after roughly 210 characters on desktop and around 140 in the mobile app (about 3 lines). That is a display cut, not a character cap. Our LinkedIn text formatter shows both cuts while you write.

What is the LinkedIn post character limit?

3,000 characters, including spaces, line breaks and emoji. LinkedIn's help pages "Post and share updates" and "Differences between posting updates and publishing articles" both state it (checked Nov 6, 2026).

Past 3,000, LinkedIn pushes you toward an article instead. Articles allow up to 125,000 characters on the same help page.

Practical tips that actually matter more than filling the box:

  • Put the point in the first 140 characters so the mobile "see more" cut still lands the claim.
  • Blank lines count as lines in the fold, so do not burn the top of the post on empty space.
  • A link or an image, not both, is how the share box behaves today.

Headline, About and the rest of the profile

Headline: 220 characters. The editor refuses a 221st character. Far less than that shows next to your name in search, comments and invitations (often about the first 60 to 70), so lead with who you help and the outcome. The free LinkedIn headline generator drafts options that fit.

About / summary: 2,600 characters. Only the opening lines show before "see more", so the first sentence should say who you help. The LinkedIn profile optimizer checks the same surface.

Experience title / description: commonly measured at 100 and 2,000 characters per role. LinkedIn does not publish a neat help article for these, so treat them as measured.

Comments, connection notes and messages

Comments: about 1,250 characters. LinkedIn documents group-comment limits and the two help pages disagree (1,250 vs 1,000). Feed comments are commonly measured at 1,250 and show in full with no fold, which makes a long comment a different surface from a folded post.

Connection request note: 200 characters on LinkedIn's current help page. An older page gave Premium members 300. Free accounts also have a monthly cap on how many personalized notes they can send ("a few a month"; see LinkedIn connection limit). If you have Premium, check the counter in your own invite box.

Direct messages: commonly measured at 8,000 characters to an existing connection. LinkedIn's published 8,000 figure is for Conversation Ads, not member DMs, so split a long message before you hit the wall.

InMail: subject 200, body 2,000 on the standard help page; Sales Navigator and Recruiter pages have listed 1,900 for the body. Check the composer you are in.

How this ties to LeadShark limits

Character caps are separate from rate caps. LeadShark connection requests go up to 80 a day and 200 a week on all paid plans (see LinkedIn connection limit). For DMs, you set your own daily limit from 0 to 250 (150 recommended max); see LinkedIn DM limit per day. Neither changes how long a single post, note or message can be.

If you are writing lead-magnet posts and want every commenter answered, LeadShark replies and DMs the resource for you. More than 1,500 creators use it, and it has delivered 2.7M+ DMs. Try it free for 7 days, no card. See pricing and LinkedIn comment to DM.
